Killer Savings This Halloween

Posted by admin on October 2, 2014

Halloween is one of my favorite holidays! Halloween means that fall is here and the rest of the holiday season is well on its way. When I’m not stressing about how quickly the end of the year is coming, I love to sit back and appreciate the cooler weather and all of the fun that comes along with this spooky holiday!

But I know as well as anyone how quickly costs can accumulate when you’re buying costumes for yourself and your family. But just because store-bought Halloween costumes can be expensive, doesn’t mean you have to miss out on one of the best parts of this holiday! Here are my top five favorite homemade costumes and links to tutorials, so you can make them at home!

1) Bag of Jelly Beans
This is a great DIY costume for the young a young at heart. The best part? It’s so simple! First, take a large, clear trash bag and cut out holes at the bottom for your legs. Fill the inside of the trash bag with multicolored, miniature balloons. Then, secure the top of the bag around your neck with some colorful ribbon. To add some extra oomph to this costume, print out a Jelly Belly label or create your own “Nutritional Facts” sticker to put on the back. 2) Mummy
Becoming a mummy for Halloween can be as easy as wrapping yourself in light-colored clothing, paper towels, toilet paper and cheesecloth. To take it to the next level, dye your wrappings with cold coffee the day before and allow to dry overnight. Here’s the best tutorial I’ve found: http://www.marthastewart.com/265931/mummy-makeup?czone=holiday/halloween-center/halloween-center-costumes&center=276965&gallery=275248&slide=209212

But don’t forget to pick up some dark eye make-up to really spook up the costume.

3) Waldo and Wenda
Who doesn’t love hunting for Waldo and Wenda in a crowd? That’s what makes this the perfect costume—you can never have too many of these sneaky crowd-surfers at a party. In fact, the more the merrier, so dress the whole family up like the dynamic duo. Forget worrying that someone else will have your costume at the local block party—you’ll be a scene right out of one of the eye-spy books.

All you need is a red-and-white striped shirt and hat; a pair of round, black-framed eyeglasses; and jeans. For a more detailed description of how to create your own Where’s Waldo or Where’s Wenda costume, check out this site: http://inhabitat.com/diy-how-to-make-a-waldo-costume-for-halloween/

4) Vampire
Vampire costumes have been around forever! But pop culture has reinvented this classic costume, and now there is a broad spectrum of vampire looks to choose from, ranging from the classic black formal wear and cape to the more casual look coming out of the young-adult Twilight series.

5) The Addams Family
Who’s your favorite Addams Family character? From Morticia and Gomez to Wednesday and Cousin It, there are plenty of easy-to-diy costumes in the members of this household. I love it when a whole family dresses up together, and this is the perfect opportunity for you and your brood to tackle a group costume.

Whether you’re looking for a ghostly getup or a comical costume, there are plenty of opportunities to put together a Halloween look with inexpensive items and things you already have on-hand. The most important tool you need is your imagination, so remember to think outside the box and have just have fun!

Until next time, I witch you a Happy Halloween!
